The 13 Steps

1. Go out with your camera with the primary aim of taking photos
2. Have at least one photo project on the go at any one time
3. Keep records of interesting photo venues and revisit them regularly –scenes change with the time of day, year, weather etc
4. Have a work plan, or a philosophy for operating
5. Spend time really exploring your subject, take multiple images
6. Set regular time aside to study and read about art & photography, visit exhibitions and galleries
7. Collect ideas and don’t be afraid to imitate or copy
8. Use a tripod –it slows you down and makes you consider the scene
9. Learn to love your computer and your image manipulation software, explore the functionality of your camera
10. Think about equipment other than your camera
11. Share your images with others, seek out feedback and critique, learn to edit your work
12. Try and avoid shooting the obvious
13. Be creative, experiment with new ideas, challenge yourself
